Cape Coral, FL : Suspected drunk driver kills man in Cape crash on Sunday, July 5, 2015
Cape Coral police say a drunk driver slammed into another car full of people at the intersection of Veterans Parkway and Skyline Boulevard over the holiday weekend.
The crash creating a roaring boom some mistook as part of the holiday festivities.
"The kids are like, 'Yeah that was a firework,' and one of the neighbors said, 'No, that wasn't a firework. It sounded like a crash," said Jacqueline Schafer
It happened about 100 yards from Schafer's home.
"I'm sad for the person that died, you know, my feelings go out to
family," Schafer said.
Paul Ortiz, 84, of South Carolina, died in the crash. In an email to NBC2, a family member tells us they are grief-stricken by the loss.
They added that another member of the family has injuries so severe they will need a wheelchair for life.
"In this case, didn't heed the warnings, didn't pay attention to what
was going on and chose to make a decision that is going to irreparably
change some peoples' lives and ended the life of one person," said Sgt. Dana Coston of the Cape Coral Police Department.
Investigators say the driver responsible is 36-year-old Montaigu Moselle of Rhode Island. They added that alcohol is a factor in the crash.
Police say charges are pending as they work to complete the investigation.
