Indianapolis, IN : Man crashes pickup after leading police on pursuit on Friday, March 17th 2017
A 59-year-old man led police on a chase that ended when his vehicle was forced into a spin and crashed into the concrete base of a sign Friday evening on Oakland Avenue in White Township.
According to state police in Indiana, the incident began around 7:45 p.m. on Philadelphia Street in Indiana as a state trooper tried to pull over the driver of a pickup truck for running through a stop sign.
However, the driver refused to stop and twice attempted to strike the trooper’s vehicle, police said.
The man then fled, but his pickup was spotted not more than five minutes later in White Township. Police said the man steered toward a state police vehicle, initiating a second pursuit.
Police said the man ran several red lights, but was stopped after troopers executed what’s known as the precision immobilization technique, or “PIT” maneuver, on Oakland Avenue.
Police said that upon executing the maneuver, the man lost control of his vehicle and crashed into the concrete base of a sign for Mohawk Lanes.
According to Indiana Fire Association third assistant chief Ron Moreau, the pickup caught fire. When firefighters arrived, it was engulfed in flames, but the man already had been pulled from the vehicle and was in custody. The driver was later taken to a hospital, Moreau said.
