Mountain Pass, California
A Las Vegas man and his 2-month-old grandson were killed in a New Year’s Day crash along the 15 Freeway about 16 miles from the state line, according to the San Bernardino County coroner’s website.
Abraham Jones, 79, and his grandson, Timol Jenkins Jr., were killed about 5 a.m. Sunday.
Jones was driving a 2015 Nissan Altima north on the 15 Freeway when he was struck from behind by a 2002 Infiniti G35, according to the coroner’s website. The Infiniti spun off into the center divider, and the Nissan stopped in the fast lane, officials said.
Jones got out of the Nissan, leaving the infant inside the vehicle. While standing behind the Altima, he and the Nissan were struck again by a 2006 Toyota Corolla.
Both Jones and the child were pronounced dead at the scene.
The Barstow office of the California Highway Patrol is investigating the fatal crash.
