Oxnard, CA : One person killed and another critically injured in Oxnard car crash Thursday October 15 2015

One person was killed and another critically injured in an Oxnard car crash Thursday night, police said.
Authorities said the single-car crash occurred about 10:40 p.m. at Ventura and Wagon Wheel roads. Firefighters and other rescue personnel used the Jaws of Life to extricate the two male occupants from the car.
The driver, Asael Gregorio Mendez, 18, of Port Hueneme, sustained serious injuries and was taken to Ventura County Medical Center, where he was in critical condition, Oxnard police said.
The passenger, an 18-year-old man, was pronounced dead at the scene. His name had not been released.
A preliminary investigation and witness accounts indicate the car was traveling north on Ventura Road approaching Wagon Wheel Road at a high rate of speed, officials said. For an unknown reason, the driver lost control, veered off the road and crashed into a block wall at the entrance to a shopping center, police said.
The vehicle also struck a fire hydrant on the sidewalk. The hydrant was sheered off and landed several feet away in the southbound lanes of Ventura Road. The car came to rest on the median of Ventura Road, police said.
