SOUTHAVEN, MS : Southaven cop injured, suspect killed during undercover drug operation on May 28th 2014
A car slammed into a Southaven police officer when an undercover drug operation went horribly wrong.
It happened Wednesday morning around 9:30 at the Big Lots store at 857 Stateline Road.
"There was a policeman jumping into a black vehicle, and he threw it in park. As soon as he got out, he got on his radio and said, 'shots fired shots fired,'" said Dale Jennings, who saw the whole thing.
A suspect, who is now dead, drove a car containing a child and another suspect into a Southaven police officer. Officers then opened fire and killed the driver.
Police have a second suspect in custody.
District Attorney John Champion confirmed that a child was in the car during the shooting, but couldn't detail the little one's relationship to any of the suspects in the car.
Police say the officers involved in the altercation were in plain clothes because they were part of an undercover drug operation.
Champion says the Stateline Road area is a typical place for drug dealers looking to make a sale in Mississippi.
"It's scary. I live over right behind all this and it's just scary," said Connie Vaughn.
