Memphis, TN : Pedestrian hit and killed on the sidewalk at Park Avenue and Echles Street on Wednesday night, March 23, 2016
A pedestrian was hit and killed on the sidewalk at Park Avenue and Echles Street on Wednesday night.
Investigators said a trailer came unhitched in transit and hit the pedestrian. Police identified the victim as 55-year-old Kevin Jordan.
"Boom. That's what I heard," witness Jermaine Cledsoe said.
Cledsoe walked outside and saw what happened.
"I didn't see no ambulance. I looked and saw the sheet right here," Cledsoe said.
Police said Jordan was walking westbound on the sidewalk in the 3700 block of Park Avenue when a 15-foot trailer came unhitched from a 2008 Dodge Ram and slammed into him. The trailer had tires in it.
The accident happened in front of a veterinary clinic that is next door to a dentist's office.
Dr. Pete Trimble was about to work on a patient when he heard the noise.
"When I came out, the body was already covered. Lots of police cars," said Dr. Trimble.
Orange markings on the street show where the trailer left the road. It traveled across the sidewalk, struck the man, and then ran into the fence and bushes in front of the vet's office.
The veterinarian told Sue Trimble what she saw.
"She was telling us it looked like he was walking down the street, looking at his phone and the trailer hit him. That was it," Trimble said.
The Trimbles believe the man may have hit a bump in the road that drivers hit all the time.
"You can hear them hitting it all day. Makes a real loud noise," Trimble said.
The driver was not cited in the incident.
