Tony Junious, the mayor of Summerton, died in a car crash Saturday morning, according to Clarendon County Coroner Jacqueline Blackwell.
Junious, a Summerton native, was the town’s first Black mayor. He was 48 years old.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol (SCHP) said the crash happened at 10:33 a.m. Saturday at the intersection of Governor Richardson Road and Liberty Hill Road in Clarendon County.
A Chevy Impala was traveling west on Governor Richardson Road and collided with a Dodge Charger traveling north on Liberty Hill Road. The Chevy traveled off the right side of the road and struck a ditch, Highway Patrol said.
