Car crash leaves one dead in Rockbridge

The Virginia State Police are investigating a fatal car crash that happened early Tuesday morning in Rockbridge County.State police said that at about 1:30 a.m. a 2006 Chevy Tahoe, carrying 10 people, was traveling southbound on Turkey Hill Road, then ran off the left side of the road and hit a tree stump, overturning the vehicle.The driver of the Tahoe, Nicholas Perry Hansel, 21, of New Orleans was taken to Carilion Stonewall Jackson Hospital for minor injuries.After Hansel was treated, he was charged with DUI and refusal and is being held in Rockbridge County jail.A rear-seat passenger, Kelsey H. Durkin, 21, of New Canaan, Conn., was taken to Stonewall Jackson Hospital by private vehicle and was dead on arrival.Durkin, according to police, was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the vehicle.
Washington and Lee President Kenneth P. Ruscio said in a statement that Durkin was a student at the university.Two other students were airlifted to the University of Virginia Medical Center and one was airlifted to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. Three other students were treated for their injuries at Carilion Stonewall Jackson Hospital and two students refused treatment.
The names of the injured students are not available at this time.
No further information is available regarding the crash, and the investigation remains ongoing, police said.
