McPherson, KS : Two injured in crash that sent vehicle into McPherson creek on Tuesday, July 12, 2016

One person was airlifted to a Wichita hospital with serious injuries and another received minor injuries in a two-vehicle crash that landed one vehicle in a creek Tuesday.

McPherson Fire Department Lt. Kelly Pauls said his department was called to Kansas Avenue and south Lakeside Drive, near Lakeside Park, where two pickup trucks collided. One came to rest on the road and the other in the Lakeside Creek bank with its front end in the water.

An adult female driver had to be extricated from the pickup that was in the water. She was not underwater when emergency responders found her.

She had to be extricated by the Jaws of Life and put on a boat that took her to the other side of the creek, where responders pulled her up and out of the water.

An air ambulance landed in the park, instead of the hospital like it typically does, and transported her to a Wichita hospital with serious injuries.

“Actually she was lucky, because a week ago, the water would have been up over the crest – so it would have been a whole different story,” Pauls said.

Her pickup was then pulled from the creek successfully.

The adult male, who was driving the other pickup, sustained minor injuries, Pauls said.

While the driver was treated by EMS, Pauls said he was not sure if he was taken to the hospital.

Pauls, who’s been with the department for 17 years, said he doesn’t believe a vehicle has landed in the creek before.

“This is a whole different experience for us,” he said.

Names and conditions were not immediately available.
