Wayne, NJ : 37-year-old driver and 14-year-old passenger died in a car crash on Route 80 in Wayne Saturday, Aug 15, 2015
The second passenger in a car crash that killed the 37-year-old driver and a 14-year-old passenger died Sunday, New Jersey State Police said.
Michael LaVecchia III, 13, died of his injuries just before noon Sunday at St. Joseph's Medical Center in Paterson, state police Sgt. 1st Class Gregory Williams said.
The boy was riding in the front seat Saturday in a car driven by his father, Michael LaVecchia Jr., also of East Stroudsburg, Pa. LaVecchia's car slammed into the back of a dump truck parked on the shoulder of Route 80 eastbound in Wayne, Williams said.
The elder LaVecchia and Giovanni LaBoy, 14, of Centereach, N.Y., died Saturday, Williams said. The LaVecchias were wearing their seatbelts, while LaBoy, seated in the back, was not.
It's not clear how LaBoy knew the LaVecchias or why they were travelling together, Williams said. Police are conducting a toxicology report because possible drug paraphernalia was found in the elder LaVecchia's pocket, Williams said, but there is no other evidence that drugs or alcohol were involved.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation, Williams said.
