Pilot Mound, MN : 10-year-old killed in ATV accident in Fillmore County on Saturday morning, March 26, 2016
A 10-year-old boy was killed in a ATV accident late Saturday morning, according to the Fillmore County Sheriff's Office.
Hunter Wayne Bergo was the victim, according to Nick Bakke, a friend of the family. Hunter was traveling on a large ATV, a Polaris Ranger with a roll cage, on a routine trip to drop egg cartons off at a neighbor's house less than a mile away.
Bakke said Hunter took a corner too fast and rolled the ATV around 11 a.m. A neighbor was on the scene immediately and notified authorities.
The sheriff's office responded around 11 a.m. to the accident near the intersection of Harrow Road and Hook Lane, just south of Pilot Mound, south of U.S. Highway 30.
The Chatfield Police Department, Chatfield Ambulance and the Fillmore County Sheriff's Office all responded. The Fillmore County Sheriff's Office is investigating the accident.
Hunter, the son of Ryker and Lena Bergo, and his mother, Cheryl Kliene, was a "daddy's boy," said Bakke. He enjoyed fishing and hunting trips with his dad. The duo did an annual bear hunting trip to Canada, and most recently traveled to Kansas for a bow hunting trip.
The fourth-grader went to school in Lanesboro and is being remembered as a kid who enjoyed playing basketball, flag football and wrestling. Bakke said Hunter had the most "innocent little heart and attitude."
"He was the kindest kid, he didn't have an ounce of hate in him," noting his generosity and honesty. "He cared about his friends," Bakke said.
Bakke also said Hunter cherished being a big brother to his 2-year-old brother, Zeke.
"This is stereotypical, but it's the truth — he was always smiling," Bakke said.
