WASHINGTONVILLE, PA : 2 women dead in SUV collision on Tuesday, 10th April 2018

Two women were killed Tuesday when the SUVs they were driving collided head-on along Route 54, three miles west of here, according to state police.

Melanie M. Powers, 32, of Pennsdale, and Kimberly A. Morgan, 43, of Danville, both were pronounced dead soon after they arrived in ambulances at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, about 12 miles from the crash site.

Morgan, driving a 2004 Subaru Forester, was traveling west when she crossed into the eastbound lane for an unknown reason about 7:50 a.m., Trooper Scott A. Carl, the lead investigator, said.

Her vehicle struck an eastbound 2008 Ford Escape driven by Powers, Carl said. The crash occurred in Montour County’s Anthony Township, just east of Route 44 (White Hall Road).

Moments before the crash, another motorist had to drive off the road to avoid being hit by Morgan’s vehicle, Carl said.

Following the crash, Powers’ vehicle went off the road, landing in a field. Powers and Morgan were each trapped in their vehicles for about an hour. Firefighters had to remove the roofs of both vehicles to free the women.

Emergency reponders were seen performing cardio-pulmonary resuscitation on one of the women as she was being loaded into the back of an ambulance.

Volunteer firefighters from Warrior Run Area, Washingtonville, Valley Township and Muncy Area responded to the crash, which closed a section of the road for more than five hours as troopers processed the scene, taking photos and measurements.
