Dalton, GA : One dead, 4 injured in crash on Tuesday morning, May 24, 2016

A father died this morning when another driver crossed the Airport Road center line in a pickup truck and hit a Chevrolet Suburban head-on.

The three children in the car escaped serious injury and were taken to Hamilton Medical Center after the crash, according to the Georgia State Patrol, which was working the scene.

The driver of the white Ford Ranger was taken from the scene by LifeForce helicopter and transported to Erlanger Hospital in Chattanooga and was in stable condition.

The crash happened shortly after 7:30. According to scanner traffic, initial responders reported multiple injuries with compound fractures and at least one of those injured in the wreck had to be extricated from the wreckage with the use of hydraulic cutting tools.

The state patrol’s Crash Scene Reconstruction Team was on site today, and Cpl. E. Tommy Bonaparte said charges would be pending in the case.

Bonaparte said a witness following the Ranger said the vehicle made a sharp turn to the left while driving eastbound on Airport Road, slamming into the Suburban and giving the driver of the Suburban no time to avoid the collision. Bonaparte said it was possible the driver of the Ranger, who was a third-shift worker, could have fallen asleep at the wheel.

The driver of the Suburban died at the scene of the crash.

Authorities have not released the name of the victims.
