Columbia, MO : Woman dead after fleeing from a trooper in west Columbia early Thursday morning, December 29, 2016
A woman is dead after fleeing from a trooper in west Columbia early Thursday morning and losing control of her car. The crash happened on West Worley Street near Park DeVille Place at around 1:18 a.m.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, at 1:16 Thursday morning, a trooper spotted a 1999 Chevy Lumina driven by 51-year-old Karin Kespohl of Columbia at the intersection of Stadium and I-70 in Columbia with the driver's side door open.
The trooper, thinking the driver might need help, activated his lights and stopped the car at Stadium and Worley. As he approached the car on foot, Kespohl took off at a high rate of speed heading west on Worley.
The trooper got back into his car and followed. When he crested a hill a short time later, he spotted Kespohl's car off the right side of the road, where it had overturned.
Kespohl was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.
Troopers said it was unknown if she was wearing her seat belt at the time of the crash. The investigation continues.
