Barstow, CA : 54-year-old man died in a crash on Interstate 15 near Baker on Friday morning, December 30, 2016

A 54-year-old man died when his vehicle drifted off the road and crashed early Friday morning, authorities said.

Just before 6:30 a.m., California Highway Patrol officers received reports of a solo-vehicle crash involving a 2016 Toyota Camry on Interstate 15 north of Zzyzx Road, near Baker.

CHP officials said the man was headed south on the freeway when, for unknown reasons, his vehicle drifted to the right and struck a guardrail. The impact caused the Camry to continue several more feet before it landed in a concrete culvert.

The man was pronounced dead when authorities arrived. His identity is being withheld pending notification of his family.

Officials said alcohol or drugs are not believed to be contributing factors in the crash, which remains under investigation by the Barstow CHP office.
