Rossburg, OH : Racer dies after Eldora Speedway crash on Saturday night, September 10, 2016
An area race car driver died Saturday night after a crash at Eldora Speedway in Darke County.
According to a press release from the speedway, Dirt Late Model racer Shane Unger died Saturday night at Mercer County Community Hospital in Coldwater, Ohio.
Unger, of Rossburg, was 35.
During a late restart in the second heat race at the World 100, Unger was involved in a multi-car crash in Turn 3 of the half-mile oval.
The release said emergency crews quickly attended to Unger and placed him in an ambulance to take him to the hospital.
Eldora Speedway General Manager Roger Slack told USA TODAY Sports in an email that Unger's car was equipped with a HANS device, which stops a driver’s head and neck from moving forward in a collision.
Drivers in the final race of the night lined up four cars wide as a tribute to Unger and other drivers who have lost their lives racing, according to USA TODAY.
Unger's family members have expressed appreciation for prayers and support from the racing community and request their privacy be respected at this time, speedway officials said.
The speedway said additional information will be made available when appropriate at its website, www.EldoraSpeedway.com.
The speedway's website proclaims the track is the home of "The Biggest Dirt Races in The World" including Saturday's World 100, along with the Dirt Late Model Dream and the Kings Royal.
Earl Baltes developed Eldora Speedway in 1954 and chose to sell the high-banked clay oval track to motorsports entrepreneur and NASCAR, IndyCar and USAC champion Tony Stewart in 2004.
Saturday's race winner was 19-year-old Bobby Pierce of Illinois. Competitors came from all around the country for the World 100.
