Morganton, N.C : Couple injured after tree crashes onto car on I-40 near mile marker 100 in Morganton on Monday, Nov 30, 2015
Morganton, North Carolina
A tree toppled onto the car of a Raleigh couple who were driving Monday on Interstate 40, troopers said.
Charles Baucom, 71, and his wife Deborah, 62, were returning from a Thanksgiving trip when a tree about 1 1/2 feet in diameter crashed onto a bridge and then landed on their car.
The crash happened in the eastbound lanes near mile marker 100 in Morganton.
The tree shattered the couple's windshield, and part of it fell into the car.
Horace Williams rushed to the couple after the tree shattered their windshield while they were traveling the 65 mph speed limit.
“It was kind of like slow motion,” Williams said.
He didn’t know what exactly happened as he approached the car.
“There was a piece of log that had broken from windshield pillar to windshield pillar," he said.
Highway Patrol said the tree was dead and the saturated ground help bring it down.
"By it being dead, that probably helped because it broke apart a little bit,” Daniel Lane, with the Highway Patrol, said. “So that probably helped a little bit. If it had been a solid tree, the injuries could have been a lot worse. (They are) very lucky to be alive."
The Department of Transportation said they are always on the lookout for problems along the interstate.
The couple was taken to the hospital.
