Pasadena, TX : Driver thrown from car dies in northwest Harris County wreck on Saturday, June 24, 2017
A female driver died early Saturday morning after being thrown from her vehicle following a wreck in northwest Harris County, according to the sheriff's office. Shortly after the crash, another driver was arrested for speeding through the crime scene and almost striking deputies.
A Jeep Compass traveling eastbound on Antoine Drive entered the intersection of Texas 249 around 1:15 a.m., when a white KIA traveling southbound also entered the intersection.
The KIA struck the Jeep Compass, causing the Jeep to start spinning out of control. The KIA swerved and ended up in a ditch on the east side of the roadway.
After the Jeep spun, it was facing northbound in the southbound lanes of Texas 249. The car's spinning caused its battery to be knocked out of the vehicle and its headlights to turn off.
A pickup driver traveling southbound on Texas 249 did not see the Jeep in its lane of traffic because the car did not have headlights on.
The pickup truck struck the Jeep, causing the driver to be thrown from the vehicle. She died at the scene, according to the sheriff's office.
Authorities are still unclear which car ran the red light in the intersection of Texas 249 causing the crash.
The driver of the KIA was intoxicated and is currently in custody. The driver has two prior convictions of driving under the influence, according to Harris County sheriff's Sgt. S. Wolverton
Wolverton said investigators are trying to determine who ran the red light that caused the initial wreck.
He said if they can find a witness who saw the driver of the KIA run the red light, the driver's charges may be upgraded to a felony murder charge.
"Unfortunately, we don't have any witnesses who remained on scene who can testify to who ran the red light," Wolverton said. "That's important to determine the causation of this crash."
Additionally, after the investigation into the collision began, a driver traveling southbound on Texas 249 sped through the patrol cars blocking the intersection and almost struck deputies at the scene.
Authorities were able pursue the suspect and take the driver into custody. The driver is charged with evading arrest and driving while under the influence.
"I happened to be standing in the lane he was traveling in," Wolverton said. "Had deputies not started hollering and yelling, I may have been run over, honestly. It was a close call."
