A woman died late Monday when the car in which she was riding crashed off Interstate 5 in Yolo County after the driver led California Highway Patrol officers on a pursuit, according to the CHP.
About 10:17 p.m., a Willows CHP officer attempted to stop a silver 1999 Honda Accord for speeding on southbound I-5 near the Glenn/Colusa county line. The driver of the Honda failed to stop and continued southbound, attempting to elude the officer, according to a CHP news release.
The pursuit continued through Colusa County, and Williams CHP officers took over the chase. The Honda exited the freeway in Arbuckle, then re-entered I-5, traveling in the wrong direction, heading southbound in northbound lanes. As the Honda approached the Dunnigan rest stop, the driver steered the vehicle in an easterly direction, according to the CHP. The Honda left the roadway and struck a large tree.
CHP officers arrived at the scene and began to render aid to the vehicle's occupants. The female passenger sustained fatal injuries in the crash, the CHP reported. Her name has not been release pending notification of family.
The driver, identified by the CHP as Thomas Leae, 21, of Renton, Wash., was taken to UC Davis Medical Center with major injuries.
