Aspen, CO : Colten Moore on the mend after crash, appreciates well wishes on Monday, January 30th 2017
Colten Moore, the snowmobile rider injured in a crash Sunday at the 2017 Winter X Games, is recovering from a lower back injury he suffered after attempting to land a double back flip, according to a statement released Monday night by ESPN on behalf of the Texas athlete’s family
“Colten had successful surgery [Sunday] to treat a lower back injury,” the statement says. “He is resting and recovering well, and he and his family appreciate all of the support, well-wishes and prayers from his fans.”
ESPN spokesman Danny Chi declined to reveal where Moore was being treated. Moore who was thrown from his snowmobile upon impact after catching gigantic air off a jump during the snowmobile best trick event that closed the X Games. Medics attended to him on the scene, and he taken to Aspen Valley Hospital for observation.
Moore’s brother, Caleb, sustained fatal injuries from a crash suffered during an X Games snowmobile event in 2013.
Heath Frisby, another decorated snowmobiler and X Games star, was also unsuccessful in his attempt at sticking the double back flip, which has never been done in competition. Unlike Colten Moore, Frisby walked away from the crash on Sunday and declined the opportunity for a second run.
Snowmobile best trick was won Sunday by Daniel Bodin of Sweden, who opted against trying the double back flip at the X Games even though a YouTube video shows him successfully nailing the dangerous maneuver in practice.
Bodin dedicated his X Games gold medal on Sunday to his two colleagues who had the temerity to attempt the double back flip.
