A 21-year-old woman from Denver was killed and a second woman seriously injured in a head-on crash on U.S. 287 on Wednesday– one of five reported fatal crashes in Northern Colorado during an icy storm.
The younger woman was headed south on U.S. 287near Livermore and lost control on a curve about 4:40 p.m., and her car slid into northbound lanes and hit another car head-on, according to the Colorado State Patrol.
The driver of the second car, a 53-year-old woman, was seriously injured and transported to Poudre Valley Hospital in Fort Collins. Information on her condition was not immediately available.
The crash closed the highway for more than three hours Wednesday night.
Troopers believe that the vehicle was driving too fast for the icy conditions that caused crashes across the state on Thursday. Two fatal crashes also occurred in Weld County, one in Morgan County and another in Logan County, resulting in five deaths, according to State Patrol reports.
Both Loveland Police and Fort Collins police went on accident alert, and officials report a crude oil tanker overturned on Colorado 402 east of Interstate 25, though no oil spilled.
Officials say roads remain icy in some areas Thursday and urge drivers to slow down and be cautious.
Because of the weather, the Thompson School District canceled its board meeting and all evening school activities on Wednesday. However, schools opened as usual for classes on Thursday morning.
The National Weather Service calls for a continued chance of freezing drizzle and snow throughout the day and overnight with sunshine returning on Friday. The high is expected to be 36 on Friday, but Saturday's outlook is a high of 59.
