Trenton, FL : North Florida man and 5-year-old girl seriously injured in an ATV crash in Gilchrist County on Saturday, Nov 21, 2015

A 5-year-old girl from Newberry and her father were hospitalized with serious injuries Saturday after the ATV they were riding in overturned on private property in Gilchrist County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Five-year-old Kingsley Tompkins was taken to UF Health Shands Hospital with critical injuries, FHP reported. Her father, 39-year-old Benjamin Tompkins of Newberry, was taken to the same hospital with serious injuries after the accident, which happened around 7:20 p.m. Saturday.

Benjamin was driving an Arctic Cat ATV in a grass field situated on Southeast 45th Avenue at Southeast 17th Trail but wasn’t able to maintain control as he turned sharply to the left, a FHP news release said. The ATV overturned.

Both Benjamin and Kingsley were ejected and ended up underneath the vehicle, according to FHP. The two other passengers -- 61-year-old Ian Craw and 11-year-old Dylan Tompkins, both of Gainesville -- were properly restrained and were not ejected from the ATV.

FHP spokeswoman Sgt. Tracy Hisler-Pace said Kingsley still was in critical condition Monday but is stable. She did not yet have an update on Benjamin's condition as of early Monday afternoon.
