Concord, NC : One person killed in school bus crash at N.C. 73/Davidson Highway April.12th, 2016
One person has died in traffic accident involving a Cabarrus County school bus about 9 a.m. this morning on N.C. 73/Davidson Highway at LaForest Lane near Lake Don T. Howell.
James Patrick Murphy, 66, of Denver died, according to N.C. State Trooper Wade Nesbit. Murphy was driving a 2003 Saturn.
The accident involved two cars and the bus, Nesbit said. Murphy's car crossed the center line, colliding head-on with the school bus. A second car crashed into the back of the bus.
No students were on the bus at the time.
Nesbit said they are investigating whether a medical condition may have caused the driver to cross the center line. Murphy had an appointment scheduled at the VA Medical Center.
Lisa Blakney was driving Bus 1154 from Harris Road Middle School. The other driver was James Wetter of 1222 Ray Suggs Place, Concord. Neither Blakney nor Wetter were injured, Nesbit said.
Traffic was heavy in the area and Cabarrus sheriff's deputies was keeping people away from the scene, while the N.C. Highway Patrol investigated the accident. Traffic was diverted at the intersection of Odell School Road at N.C. 73.
