TROY, NC : Head-on collision near Troy kills both drivers on May, Tuesday, 16th 2017

A head-on collision took two lives in an automobile accident approximately 1.8 miles north of Troy at about 1 p.m. Tuesday afternoon.

According to N.C. Highway Patrol Trooper Gary Beaman, Ronald Vance Thomas, 70, of 403 S. Main St., Candor, was driving a 2006 Dodge van south on N.C. 109 when his vehicle went left of center and collided head-on with a 1998 Nissan pickup truck that was traveling north and driven by Harold Laughlin Whitaker, 80, of 653 Correll Road, Troy.

Both drivers died on the scene, Beaman said.

He added that, according to relatives of Thomas, a medical issue may have contributed to the accident. Both men were wearing their seatbelts.
