One person was killed in a collision on SC 183 in Pickens County Tuesday afternoon, troopers confirm.
Troopers say a driver in a Honda was driving north on SC 183 when a driver in a Jeep SUV attempted to turn left, striking the driver in the Honda head on. The incident happened at 12:20 p.m.
Troopers say the driver in the Honda was wearing a seat belt during the collision, but became entrapped, requiring extraction from the vehicle. The victim was transported via EMS to GHS and was pronounced dead at 6:48 p.m., per troopers.
The driver in the Jeep was charged with failure to yield to right of way. The driver was also injured and transported to GHS. A 5-year-old passenger in the vehicle was not injured.
The victim was identified as 67-year-old Paul Ruppert of Pickens. The coroner said Ruppert died from internal injuries.
Easley Police Chief Tim Tollison confirmed that Paul Ruppert was a former officer and retired form the Easley Police Department in 2012. Tollison said Ruppert "had a passion and enjoyed working traffic enforcement."
