GASTON, IN : Two people were killed in a rollover crash on February, Tuesday 27th 2018
Two people were killed in a rollover crash Tuesday afternoon on Wheeling Avenue near Delaware County Road 950-N.
The driver of one of the vehicles, Joshua Lowell Hartley, 18, of rural Gaston, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Deputy Coroner Rick Henry.
A front-seat passenger in Hartley's vehicle, Matthew T. Cass, 29, of Muncie, also died at the scene, a press release from Delaware County Sheriff Ray Dudley's office said.
Three other people were injured, two of them critically.
According to the sheriff's release, the car driven by Hartley was southbound on Wheeling when it crossed the center line and collided with a northbound vehicle driven by Benjamin Parsons, 68.
Hartley's car rolled over after the crash.
Another passenger in Hartley's vehicle, Lydia J. Astrop, 18, was in critical condition when she was flown by air ambulance to St. Vincent's Hospital in Indianapolis. She was reported to be undergoing surgery Tuesday night.
The fourth passenger in the vehicle, Jacob Hartley, 18, was taken by ambulance to IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital, and was also reported to be in critical condition. He also underwent surgery, authorities said.
Parsons also was transported to the Muncie hospital in serious condition.
Evidence collected at the scene by the sheriff's crash reconstruction team indicated "speed, alcohol and possibly illicit drugs" were likely contributing factors in the crash.
At the scene, Dudley said that alcohol bottles, pills and syringes had spilled out of the vehicle that rolled over.
