Battle Ground, WA : 94-year-old man critical injuries in a vehicle collision on state Highway 503 in Brush Prairie on Sunday, January 24, 2016

A 94-year-old Battle Ground man suffered critical injuries Sunday in a vehicle collision on state Highway 503 in Brush Prairie. His passenger, a 92-year-old Battle Ground woman, sustained injuries that were not life threatening.

The man, Alvin L. McDowell, was driving a 2016 Toyota Camry north on the highway when he slowed down for a disabled tractor-trailer in the right lane at about 12:30 p.m., according to the Washington State Patrol.

As the car slowed down, a 1998 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck driven Scott M. Maynard, 27, of Clatskanie, Ore., struck the car, State Patrol said.

McDowell and his passenger, Wava E. Gudmunson, were transported to PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center. McDowell was listed in critical condition Sunday evening, while Gudmunson was in satisfactory condition, according to hospital staff.

Maynard was not injured, nor were four passengers in the pickup: 34-year-old Mala Choum of Vancouver, a 6-year-old Vancouver boy, a 13-year-old Vancouver girl, and a 5-year-old girl from Clatskanie, according to State Patrol.

Driver inattention caused the crash, troopers said, adding that Maynard was cited for following too closely.
