Newport News, VA : Virginia State Police trooper injured in crash in Newport News early Thursday morning, March 9, 2017
A Virginia State Police trooper was injured in a crash in Newport News early Thursday morning, an official said.
Virginia State Police Trooper I.K. Ibrahim initiated a traffic stop with a Kia for speeding just before 12:30 a.m. in the westbound lanes of I-64, police spokeswoman Corinne N. Geller said in a news release.
The Kia pulled off onto the right shoulder near the Jefferson Avenue exit and the trooper pulled in behind, she said. During the stop, a westbound tractor-trailer ran off the right side of the road and sideswiped the trooper’s patrol car and the Kia.
The driver of the Kia, an 18-year-old Williamsburg woman, was not injured. A 17-year-old passenger suffered a minor injury and was treated at the scene, Geller said.
Ibrahim was seated inside his patrol car when it was struck, and the blue emergency lights were on the entire traffic stop, she said.
Ibrahim was taken by ambulance to Riverside Hospital, where he was treated and released for minor injuries, Geller said.
The driver of the tractor-trailer, Lester A. Diggs, 65, of Waldorf, Md., was not injured in the crash. He was charged with reckless driving. Fatigue was a factor in the cause of the crash, Geller said.
The tractor-trailer was loaded with 1,000 pounds of U.S. mail, she said.
