A 38-year-old Middleburg man was killed and another injured Thursday night when an Amtrak passenger train hit a pickup truck at a crossing on Green Cove Avenue in Green Cove Springs, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
Caleb Ralph Osborne was killed in the 6:25 p.m. crash, which left 41-year-old driver Richard D. Tillman, also of Middleburg, with serious injuries, according to the Highway Patrol.
The two men were headed east on Green Cove Avenue just west of South Orange Avenue when Tillman drove around crossing arms at the railroad tracks, the Highway Patrol said. The northbound Amtrak train hit the passenger side of their Chevrolet pickup truck, shoving it onto the west side of the crossing.
Tillman was taken to Orange Park Medical Center while Osborne, the passenger, was pronounced dead at the scene, the Highway Patrol said.
The train was traveling from Orlando to New York with 218 passengers when the crash occurred. No injuries were reported. The train was delayed for 90 minutes as the crash was cleared and CSX officials checked the warning lights and crossing arms.
