Sugarcreek, OH : SUV driver in hospital after crash on state Route 93, south of Sugarcreek on Wednesday afternoon, July 20, 2016
The driver of a tractor-trailer narrowly escaped his rig before it caught on fire following a crash on state Route 93, just south of the village Wednesday afternoon.
The tractor trailer, carrying plastic pellets, was engulfed in flames shortly after the crash, said Sugarcreek Fire Chief Kevin Miller at the scene.
"There was enough time for the semi driver to get out, but not much more," he said.
The crash occurred after a southbound Kia SUV crossed the center line and sideswiped the International truck, according to Holmes County Sheriff's Officet Chief Deputy Richard Haun Jr. The sheriff's office was notified about the crash at 1:43 p.m.
The SUV's 32-year-old driver was taken by helicopter to Summa Akron City Hospital. She was being treated in the emergency room Wednesday evening. Her condition was not available.
A child who was in a car seat was taken by ambulance to an area hospital for examination as a precaution, Haun said. He did not know the child's age, but said there was no visible injury.
The 68-year-old driver of the tractor trailer was not injured, Haun said.
Fire and law enforcement personnel remained at the site of the crash Wednesday evening. They asked motorists to avoid the area.
Miller said the road likely would remain closed because of damage caused by the fire.
"They'll have to grind the road down," he said. "It burned the road."
Miller said it took firefighters 45 minutes to an hour to extinguish the fire because equipment had to be put into place to attack the fire with foam.
"It was a fairly complicated incident," he said. "You had an accident with somebody entrapped. You had a semi-trailer carrying flammables that was fully engulfed and that fire had spread into the grass. You had a large fire load. You need a lot of water and foam to try and extinguish that."
"Fortunately, the vehicles were separated, and the vehicle that was entrapped, where the entrapment was, wasn't close to the fire. Otherwise there likely would have been chance of fatality."
Multiple fire departments responded to the scene, including Baltic, Dover, Sugarcreek, Wayne Township and East Holmes. Emergency medical crews came from East Holmes, Baltic and Swiss Valley Ambulance Service. The Holmes County Emergency Management Agency also was at the scene.
Haun said the crash investigation is pending "with citations to be issued."
Miller said there was "good cooperation" among the departments working at the scene.
