Tacoma, WA : Two injured in wrong-way crash that closed I-5 in Tacoma on Monday morning, December 26, 2016

A wrong-way crash injured two people and temporarily closed all lanes of southbound Interstate 5 in Tacoma on Monday morning.

The accident on I-5 occurred just before 7 a.m. around mile marker 128, near the on-ramp to state Route 512, according to the state Department of Transportation.

The Washington State Patrol reported that a black 2014 Nissan Versa was headed northbound in the freeway’s southbound lanes, where it hit another car head-on.

The Nissan had been stolen, Tacoma police spokeswoman Loretta Cool said Monday night.

The driver of the vehicle that caused the crash sustained serious injuries and had to be extracted from the car by aid workers, State Patrol spokesman Brooke Bova said.

That driver, whose name has not been released, was transported to Madigan Army Medical Center with serious injuries, Bova said.

The other driver, a 32-year-old man from Tacoma, suffered a broken arm and was transported to Tacoma General Hospital, Bova said.

Both cars were totaled in the crash, according to a news release.

Initially, all lanes of southbound I-5 were closed as aid workers responded to the crash. An incident response team opened up one southbound lane of the freeway within an hour, but other lanes of southbound I-5 remained closed until about 10 a.m., when the accident was fully cleared.

The State Patrol is investigating. It was unknown whether alcohol was a factor, a news release said.
