MABEL, IA : Two Mabel-Canton students were killed in a car crash on February, Monday 5th 2018

Two Mabel-Canton students were killed in a car crash Monday morning in Iowa, which also left several others injured.

The accident happened on County Road W40, half a mile south of 173rd Avenue around 8:30 a.m., according to the Iowa State Patrol's incident report. Avery Arneson, 17, was heading northbound on W 40 when she lost control, crossed the center line and slid sideways. A car traveling in the southbound lane hit Arneson's vehicle.

Avery and one of the passengers, 13-year-old Aiden Arneson, were both killed. The Mabel-Canton Schools District said the other three juvenile passengers were injured and transported to Winneshiek Medical Center in Decorah for medical treatment.

Their conditions were not released as of Monday night. The school district released a statement on its website, notifying parents and students that after-school activities would be canceled.

"The staff at Mabel-Canton Schools along with area clergy were available for students today and will continue to be available," said Superintendent Gary Kuphal in a statement. "As a general rule routine is good for our children, please encourage your children to come to school to be with and support their friends."
