MILAN, OH : A four-vehicle crash on U.S. 250 on Sunday, January, 5th 2018

A four-vehicle crash on U.S. 250 caused significant damage by no injuries Sunday evening.David Hartman, 44, of Norwalk, was driving a Ford F-150 north on U.S. 250 when, as he told officers, his brakes went out, causing him to rear-end the vehicle in front of him at the intersection of U.S. 250 and Ohio 113/Church Street, just outside of Milan. The collision resulted in a four-vehicle pileup at 7:30 p.m.

“There were no reported injuries but there was a lot of damage and debris,” Milan Township Fire Chief Brian Rospert said.

“There was (Hartman’s) Ford F-150 that rear-ended a Dodge, which pushed the Dodge into (a Ford Escape, which) got pushed into a Ford Ranger, which then got pushed over toward West Church Street,” Erie County Sgt. James Greenham said.

Greenham said of the eight total occupants in the four vehicles, there were no significant injuries and no one was transported to the hospital. However, “a couple kids” from the Dodge were checked by EMTs on the scene. The Dodge was occupied by two adults and three children.

The three other vehicles were either stopped at the intersection’s traffic light or coming to a stop when the accident occurred. Four fire engines, with 16 firefighters, two sheriff’s cruisers and a Milan Police Department cruiser were used to block off the U.S. 250 northbound lane between West Williams and Church streets for more than an hour.

“He claimed his brakes failed,” Greenham said of Hartman. “The deputy checked his brakes and the brakes were fine, so probably either the driver wasn’t paying attention or was distracted, something like that.”

The sergeant said alcohol and drugs did not appear to be a factor in the crash and road conditions “were fine.”
