Grass Valley, CA : Woman dies in Highway 20 car crash Friday morning on June 27, 2014
A vehicle driven by a Reno man collided with a tree off Highway 20 Friday morning, leaving the passenger dead and her husband in critical condition, according to the Grass Valley California Highway Patrol.
At approximately 11:30 a.m., Nolan and Madison Gail were headed westbound on Highway 20, just west of Excelsior Point Road, in a 2001 Jeep Cherokee at an unknown speed when the vehicle lost control.
Nolan Gail, 25, the driver, guided the car through a left curve in the road but allowed the Jeep to run off the right side of the road and onto the dirt shoulder.
Nolan Gail oversteered the vehicle to the left, causing it to skid across two lanes and run off the south side of the highway. With Madison Gail, 22, in the front passenger’s seat, the Jeep rolled over several times through surrounding brush and trees before the top of the car collided with a large tree.
Moments after the crash, Bill Locker, a Nevada City native, told The Union that he was headed northbound on the same highway with his wife and saw the vehicle on its side next to a tree.
Locker said his wife called the police to notify them of the accident while he attempted to talk to the driver, who was trapped inside the car with another person.
“I was talking to the driver while we were waiting for the fire and police to arrive,” Locker said. “The driver was breathing, but I didn’t get close enough to tell if the other person was.”
A police unit arrived shortly thereafter, and a coroner pronounced Madison Gail, the passenger, dead on scene.
Nolan Gail was flown by a Careflight helicopter to Sutter Roseville Medical Center with major injuries and is currently in critical condition. The collision is still under investigation.
