Alpine, NJ : Northern New Jersey man driving drunk when he struck a sweeper on the George Washington Bridge on Tuesday, February 2, 2016

Authorities say a northern New Jersey man was driving drunk when he struck a sweeper on the George Washington Bridge.

Port Authority of New York and New Jersey police say the crash occurred around 1:15 a.m. Tuesday in the westbound lanes of the span's upper level. The sweeper was being operated by an authority worker who was treated at a hospital for minor neck and back injuries.

Police say the vehicle's driver, 34-year-old Vaughn Preston of Cresskill, fled the scene. But an off-duty police officer soon spotted the vehicle on the Palisades Interstate Parkway, and Preston was stopped a short time later in Alpine.

Preston faces several counts, including assault by vehicle. His bail was set at $5,000 and it wasn't known Tuesday if he has retained an attorney.
