St. Augustine, FL : Pedestrian struck and killed in St. Augustine on early Monday morning, July 21, 2014
A 25-year-old man was struck by a car and killed while walking along State Road 16 in St. Augustine early Monday morning, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
State troopers said the car was heading west in the outside lane of S.R. 16 at Inman Road about 12:10 a.m. when Anthony Driver (pictured below) walked into the car's path and was hit. Troopers said he was not in a crosswalk.
Troopers said the driver of the car, 26-year-old Arsenio Brown, then went to the Dunkin' Donuts just west of Inman Road and called for help. Raphael Grant and Sameerah O'Quinn, both 24, were also in the car. No one in the car was hurt.
An employee at Dunkin' Donuts said three people in the car pulled up to their drive-through while they were closed and signaled to call 911. She said that's when they called police.
The employee said there were two men and one woman -- all in their mid-20s -- in the car who all appeared to be hearing impaired.
According to FHP, an interpreter was called to the scene to help with the investigation.
The employee said the driver of the vehicle had blood on him, but the worker wasn't sure if the man was injured or had tried to help the victim who was hit.
The Dunkin' Donuts employee said troopers told her the victim may have tripped and fallen into the path of car that hit him.
Driver's friends said he was on his way to work when he was hit. He lived down the street from where he was killed.
Driver was a graduate of Pedro Menendez High School. Friends said he was deeply loved and will be sorely missed.
His employer, McDonald's, released this statement: "We are deeply saddened by Anthony's passing, and express our heartfelt condolences to his family and friends. He was a tremendous part of our McDonald's family, and he will be greatly missed. It would be inappropriate to further comment, as the investigation into this death is ongoing."
All westbound lanes of State Road 16 at Inman Road were closed for hours while troopers investigated the crash and cleared the scene.
There was no word yet if the driver of the car will face any charges.
