Penn Hills, PA : Woman dies in single-vehicle crash on Frankstown Road in Penn Hills on Saturday morning, April 23, 2016

A woman died early this morning when her sport utility vehicle hit a telephone pole as she tried to negotiate a curve on Frankstown Road in Penn Hills.

India Allen, 22, of Penn Hills was driving a Hyundai Santa Fe in the 10000 block of Frankstown Road when she struck the pole around 3:52 a.m., according to the Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s office.

Ms. Allen, who was the vehicle’s only occupant, was pronounced dead at the scene at 4:04 a.m.

The medical examiner’s office said Ms. Allen was not wearing a seat belt.

The accident occurred at the intersection of Frankstown and McCutcheon Lane.

“We’ve had a lot of fatalities there” over the years, Penn Hills police Chief Howard Burton said this morning. ”The curve fools you. It turns quickly there.”

Sgt. Paul Markham said Ms. Allen was heading westbound toward Pittsburgh when she began edging off the road. The pole she ran into was a new telephone pole, which had been erected to replace a pole — still present at the site — that was struck just last week by a vehicle, Sgt. Markham said.

The roadway is one lane in each direction and has a posted speed limit of 35 mph.

Sgt. Markham said it would not take much excess speed for a vehicle to lose control on the curve. He added that police are looking at speeding as a possible cause of the crash. There were no obvious signs of driver impairment, the sergeant said.
