Church Hills , MD : Ten Peoples were Injured afer car struck the side of a school bus near Granny Branch Road on Thursday afternon , January 15th 2015
Ten people — eight of them Queen Anne's County High School students — were injured when a car struck the side of a school bus in Church Hill on Thursday afternoon, Jan. 15.
Lisa Lloyd, 51, of Kennedyville was driving south on Granny Branch Road in her 1999 Hyundai station wagon about 2:50 p.m., according to the Queen Anne's County Sheriff's Office. Bus No. 2510, driven by Henry Medford of Sudlersville, was headed east on Flat Iron Square Road taking students home from school at the same time.
The preliminary investigation indicates Lloyd stopped at the stop sign, then proceeded through the intersection, striking the 2010 Blue Bird school bus on the driver's side, according to Lt. Dale Patrick, public information officer for the sheriff's office.
The driver said she thought the intersection was a four-way stop; she saw the bus but said she expected it to stop, Patrick said.
Twenty-four students were on the bus at the time of the crash. Eight students were taken by ambulance to Chester River Medical Center in Chestertown for various injuries. Seven were categorized as basic life support cases; one, a leg injury, was considered an advanced life support case, Patrick said, adding none of the injuries appeared to be life-threatening.
Lloyd and her 16-year-old daughter, who was a passenger in the car, were both flown by MedEvac helicopter to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore for treatment. Both had scratches and cuts in the facial area and Lloyd was reporting chest pains, Patrick said.
Both Lloyd and her daughter were listed in fair condition at Shock Trauma Thursday night, according to Karen Lancaster, hospital director of media relations.
QACHS Principal Jackie Wilhelm, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Carol Williamson, Transportation Supervisor Margaret Ellen Kalmanowicz and Director of Operations Sid Pinder all responded to the crash scene, said Jeff Straight, public information officer for Queen Anne's County Public Schools.
