Charlotte, NC : 66-year-old Cesar Armando Ordonez killed in fatal hit-and-run crash in east Charlotte on Sunday night, March 8, 2015
Charlotte, North Carolina
Charlotte Mecklenburg police are asking for help the pickup truck that hit and killed a pedestrian on Albemarle Road late Sunday night.
Late Monday afternoon police said they are looking for a dark-colored mid or full-sized pickup that has headlight or turn signal damage after it hit Cesar Ordonez, 66, as he tried to cross Albemarle near Farm Pond Lane.
Ordonez died later at the hospital, and on Monday his family tried to understand what had happened.
“Lo siento mucho en mi corazon,” Irma Sanchez said between tears.
She said her uncle was a beautiful person and pointed upward as she added, “Yo se que esta con Dios—I know that he is with God.”
Detectives spent hours Sunday night cataloguing the evidence left at the scene, but late Monday they were still missing the critical piece—the pickup truck that hit Ordonez and kept driving.
Police said Ordonez did not cross the street in a crosswalk, and on Monday Eyewitness News saw many others doing the same.
“I have to catch this bus,” one man said as he sprinted between oncoming cars.
Jerome Hall also crossed the street outside of a crosswalk after he got off the bus.
“I see people with baby strollers and stuff like that crossing the road here and there,” Hall said.
Ordonez was hit right in front of a McDonald’s around 10 p.m. as horrified workers looked on.
Police had the road closed for nearly four hours, collecting evidence.
