Seekonk, R.I : Pawtucket man killed in Seekonk crash on Friday night, November 4, 2016

The driver involved in a fatal motor vehicle accident on Arcade Avenue Friday night has been identified as 29-year-old Pawtucket man, Seekonk Police said.

Just after 9 p.m. Friday, a Seekonk Police Officer attempted to stop a car on Fall River Avenue for an alleged motor vehicle violation, police said. The officer used emergency lighting and a siren to signal the driver to stop. However, the driver did not stop and continued traveling north on Fall River Avenue, police said.

The driver, who police said was alone in the vehicle, reached the intersection of Fall River Avenue and County Street, side-swiping a car and continuing north on Fall River Avenue, police said. The officer continued to pursue and the fleeing vehicle turned north onto Arcade Avenue by the Grist Mill Restaurant. Once on Arcade Avenue, the vehicle continued traveling north at a high rate of speed.

About two minutes after the pursuit began, around 9:07, police said the driver lost control of the car by Pleasant Street and it collided with a utility pole. Seekonk Fire and Rescue personnel arrived at the crash scene and it took about 20 minutes to extricate the driver. The driver suffered injuries in the crash and was transported to Rhode Island Hospital, where he succumbed to those injuries, police said.

Seekonk Police on Saturday were withholding the name of the driver until his family could be notified. As of Saturday, it remained unknown as to why the driver fled from the officer, police said.
