A man and a woman were taken to the hospital in critical condition after a car crash on Mercury Boulevard in Newport News Wednesday morning, officials said.
The crash happened just before 10:30 a.m. at the intersection of Newmarket Drive North, according to Master Police Officer Brandon Maynard.
There, officers and firefighter-medics found a white Nissan Altima that crashed into a metal light pole, Maynard said. The car was the only vehicle involved in the crash.

The 22-year-old woman was flown to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital by Nightingale Air Ambulance, and the 29-year-old man was taken to Sentara Norfolk by ground ambulance, police and fire officials said.
Maynard later said that both the man and the woman were reported by hospital officials to be stable.
The Newport News Police Department Crash Team Unit is investigating the circumstances of the crash, Maynard said.
Westbound Mercury Boulevard was shut down at Marshall Avenue about two hours while police investigated at the scene. It re-opened just before 1 p.m.
