Elizabethtown, KY : woman and four children injured in a single-vehicle accident in Hardin County on Sunday night, Nov 22, 2015
It was a terrifying crash as a car filled with a mother and four children flipped into a creek.
The accident happened Sunday night in the 2200 block of Rineyville Big Springs Road (KY 220) in Hardin County.
On Monday, a family member said thankfully it seems like everyone will recover. The mother, Danielle Yates, 36, along with another juvenile have been released from the hospital. Three of Yates' children remain at Kosair Children's Hospital.
"There were lights everywhere," neighbor Benjamin Elliott said. "There was like five or six cops, emergency vehicles, fire department, they were all over the place."
Elliott said he was inside his home when he heard the crash around 8 p.m. Sunday.
Kentucky State Police said Yates was driving eastbound on KY 220 when she lost control of her car, struck a guardrail and flipped 10 to 20 feet below into a shallow creek.
"I was really hoping that the kids were OK and I know that they were under water, I heard that too, and I mean I'm glad that they got out safely," Elliott said.
Three of Yates' children were in the car along with one friend.
"Our troopers got there fairly quick and also from what I understand, there were some other people that jumped in there to help, which kept a terrible scene from being a lot worse apparently," Kentucky State Police Trooper Jeff Gregory said.
By the time Elliott made it to the scene, everybody was pulled out of the car.
"I was freezing down there just watching them, so I can imagine with them being in the water," Elliott said.
Police said it's not clear what caused the wreck. One child had to be flown to Kosair Children's Hospital in Louisville.
Yates is a mother a five. Elliott said he can only imagine being in the same situation.
"I've got five of my own and if anything were to happen to them, it would break my heart," Elliott said.
Two of the children are in serious condition.
Kentucky State Police said they are continuing to investigate what happened, but at this time it doesn't appear any charges will be filed.
