Covington, LA : Lacombe man was killed in a two-vehicle crash at Interstate 12 On Friday, July 22nd, 2016
Louisiana State Police on Saturday (July 23) were investigating a two-vehicle crash that killed a Lacombe man near Covington. Gregory Dickens, 45, was pronounced dead at the scene of the Friday night wreck along
Louisiana 1077 just north of Interstate 12.
Police said Dickens was southbound when his car veered off the right side of the highway. He overcorrected and swerved twice before traveling into northbound lane, where a northbound vehicle slammed into the front
passenger door of his car.
Dickens was not wearing a seat belt. The other driver, who was wearing a seatbelt, was treated at St. Tammany Parish Hospital for minor injuries and gave troopers a breath sample. It showed no trace amounts of alcohol,
police said.
State Police do not know whether Dickens was intoxicated. A blood sample was taken and sent for toxicology tests, which usually take several weeks.
Authorities urged drivers always to use a seat belt when traveling in a vehicle. Crash investigations show seat belts saved more than 12,000 lives in 2014, according to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration data.
