A Warrensville Heights man driving a stolen pizza delivery vehicle died early Friday after a crash in downtown Cleveland, police say.
Albert Stone, 41, died about 2 a.m. after the car crashed into a pole and bridge support near Carnegie Avenue, according to the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner's Office and Cleveland police Sgt. Jennifer Ciaccia.
A driver for Rascal House Pizza left a 2009 Toyota Camry unlocked and running around 1 a.m. when he made a delivery to Flex Night Club on Hamilton Avenue near East 26th Street, Ciaccia said.
The driver told police that he spotted two men jump into his car and take off, Ciaccia said.
Police saw the Camry speeding near East 18th Street and Euclid Avenue a short while later, but officers did not give chase. Officers announced the sighting over their police radio, but the car crashed soon after.
Stone was behind the wheel, Ciaccia said. He headed south on East 18th Street, crossed through the intersection at Carnegie Avenue, then continued on East 18th Street.
Police said the car was speeding well in excess of the 25 mph speed limit.
The car traveled the wrong way down a one-way street, then lost control and veered off the side of the road at a slight turn onto East 14th Street, Ciaccia said. It crashed into a utility pole, then spun around and crashed into a bridge support, Ciaccia said.
Stone was found dead at the scene, according to the medical examiner's office.
Police have not said if anyone else was in the car at the time of the crash.
