Jacksonville, FL : 2 dead in wrong-way Hart and Wonderwood bridge crashes on the Wonderwood Bridge on Thursday, 2nd August 2018

Two wrong-way drivers caused major traffic crashes, two deaths and several injuries Thursday on Jacksonville bridges.

The first head-on collision happened about 1 a.m. on the Wonderwood Bridge. The Sheriff’s Office said one vehicle was eastbound in the westbound lane when the crash occurred, erupting one in flames. Three people with serious injuries were pulled out of the vehicles. One man was declared dead at a hospital, while two girls were being treated but expected to be OK.

The fatality victim was the driver of the car going in the wrong direction, the Sheriff’s Office said. The girls are about 10 years old and a teenager.

The second wreck happened about 4 p.m. on the Hart Bridge downtown that also left two others injured, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Two sport-utility vehicles crashed in the westbound lanes of the bridge ramp near the Maxwell House plant when one of them was going the wrong way, the Highway Patrol said.
