Doerun, GA : Truck driver dies in fiery crash; Highway 133 closed south of Doerun on Thursday morning, May 19, 2016
The Georgia State Patrol is investigating a Thursday morning wreck that killed the driver of a semi truck when it ran off the roadway about four miles south of Doerun.
The accident occurred at about 9:30 a.m. on Highway 133 and involved just the truck, whose driver left the roadway for an unknown reason, Georgia State Patrol Sgt. Jeff Culpepper said. The driver was not identified pending notification of the family.
After leaving the roadway the truck overturned and part of it caught fire, Culpepper said.
A large contingent of Colquitt County Volunteer Fire Department firefighters remained into the afternoon at the scene near the intersection with Mike Horne Road. The smell of diesel could be detected near the truck, which was overturned in a ditch.
Georgia Department of Transportation workers also were at the scene, and a number of Colquitt County Sheriff’s Office deputies were directing traffic heading to the state highway to other routes.
Colquitt County Commission said on Thursday afternoon that alternate routes had been established for as long as needed while the emergency crews make the site safe and clear the road for reopening.
Motorists are being redirected to alternate routes of Mike Horne Road on the north side of the accident and Funston-Sigsbee Road to the south.
“State and local agencies hope to have both lanes back open to traffic as soon as possible,” the county said.
The wreck was the second in the county in four days in which a semi traveled off the roadway.
Around midnight of Sunday night/Monday morning a 2007 International truck traveled off Ellenton-Omega Road. The driver, George Wesley McLeod, 53, was airlifted to a Macon hospital, the GSP said.
After leaving the roadway, McLeod's truck struck a ditch embankment and then a culvert. The truck came to a rest on its right side about 485 feet from where it left the road.
