Weld County, CO : Fort Lupton teenager dies in crash with semitrailer northeast of Firestone on Monday, August 1, 2016
A 14-year-old boy died and his 17-year-old brother went to the hospital after a semitrailer struck their pickup Monday at Weld County roads 20 and 19, about two miles northeast of Firestone in southwestern Weld County.
Colorado State Patrol responded to the crash at about 12:10 p.m., said Colorado State Patrol spokesman Trooper Nate Reid.
The 2000 Chevy Silverado was headed west on Weld 20, stopped at the stop sign and then pulled out in front the semitrailer, which was heading south on Weld 19 at the intersection, Reid said. Southbound traffic on Weld 19 does not have stop sign.
The 14-year-old passenger in the Chevy, Gavin Hoff, was pronounced dead at the scene, and the driver, a 17-year-old boy and Hoff’s brother, was taken by ambulance to North Colorado Medical Center with serious injuries, Reid said. Both were from Fort Lupton.
The driver of the semi was Daniel Richmeier, 60, of Fort Lupton.
There have been no citations issued yet, and Reid said authorities do not believe drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash.
Colorado State Patrol is handling the crash, and Reid said he did not immediately have any additional information or the name of the older brother.
Gavin is the 30th person to die on Weld roads and highways so far this year, compared with 38 by the same date a year ago.
