CLIFTON, NJ : Wrong-way drunken driver caused fatal crash on Monday, December 26th 2016
Authorities say an alleged drunken driver traveling the wrong way on a highway caused a crash that killed one person and injured two others.
Passaic County prosecutors say 32-year-old Clifton resident Louis Yanez was driving eastbound in the westbound lanes of Route 46 in Clifton when he collided with another car around 5 a.m. Monday.
The other driver, Mohamed Khawatmi, was pronounced dead at the scene. Relatives say the Clifton man would have turned 29 this week.
His two passengers, 34-year-old Kristian Salmeron of Garfield and 22-year-old Gawnna Salous of Lyndhurst, suffered undisclosed injuries and remained hospitalized Tuesday.
Yanez was charged with death by auto and two counts of assault by auto. His bail was set at $250,000 and it wasn’t known Tuesday if he has retained an attorney.
