A Crown Point man was seriously injured after losing control of his vehicle and striking a tree near Winfield in what police said was a drunken driving incident Monday night.
Darrell Head, 56, was cited for driving left of center, unsafe lane movement and a seat belt violation, Indiana State Police said.
Operating while intoxicated charges were pending Tuesday morning through the Lake County prosecutor's office.
Indiana State Police said Head registered a .25 blood alcohol concentration, more than three times the legal limit.
Troopers were called at 5:30 p.m. to the 13400 block of Montgomery Street. Police said Head was driving a 2002 Chevrolet south on Montgomery Street when he crossed the center line, drifted off the east side of the road and struck a metal mail box.
Police said the vehicle began to spin, scraped a telephone pole and hit a large tree with the passenger side rear tire and quarter panel. The vehicle eventually came to rest facing west.
Head was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident and suffered serious injuries. Police said Head was transported to Franciscan St. Anthony Health hospital in Crown Point.
Head was traveling with a family pet which was not injured.
Lakes of the Four Seasons Volunteer Fire Force and EMS, Porter County EMS and Midnight Blue Towing assisted at the accident scene.
