Georges Township, PA : Daquan Woods, 20, died and another injured after a crash on Mon-Fayette Expressway early Sunday morning, July 31, 2016
A Land Rover fatally struck a man and injured a woman, both of whom had gotten out of their car on the Mon-Fayette Expressway (Route 43) in Fayette County early Sunday morning.
State police said Daquan Woods, 20, of Hiller, was killed and Justus Mapstone, 19, of Brownsville, was taken to a Morgantown hospital after the crash on PA Turnpike 43 in Georges Township.
Police said the victims stopped their car in the right lane of the toll road, got out of the vehicle and were struck in the left lane at about 5:10 a.m.
The driver, a 22-year-old woman, hit Woods and Mapstone after swerving to avoid their car, police said. She then crashed into a concrete center barrier, crossed both lanes and hit a guiderail.
The driver wore a seat belt and was not injured, police said.
No charges have been filed. State troopers continue to investigate the crash.
"He was one of the nicest people you ever met. Anyone will tell you that. He had good friends," Woods' mother, Carla Holcomb said. "Some friends are a little unfortunate and he would help them, give them clothes or give them boots."
Holcomb said her son drove Mapstone's vehicle home from West Virginia, where they two had gone out on Saturday night. They were just friends and had met up with a group of other friends, Holcomb said.
Holcomb said her family members called her around 6:30 a.m. Sunday to tell her Woods had been hit.
"(My relative) said, 'Carla, don't come up here.' When I heard that, my whole world just went blank. I got there, but I don't know how I got there," Holcomb said. "The police officers were running to me, running to me saying, 'Get back! Get back.' I screamed, 'No. That's my son! That's my son over there.' I looked over and (saw him lying there)."
Holcomb said Woods would have turned 21 on Aug. 15.
"He loved me unconditionally and I did him the same," Holcomb said. "I don't know how I'm going to go on. I just don't."
